As my dad worked on the railways we used the trains a lot and as a family we were frequent visitors to Bishop Auckland by train. Our next door neighbour Tom Selway was a porter at Bishop Auckland railway station and a family friend called Colin Bainbridge also worked in the office at the station. I also recall going to see family friends in Sunderland using the train. The trains were great there was always a warm waiting room with a fire in the winter, a newspaper, toilet facilities, I think a little shop at Bishop as well.
